EVALUATION

Tom Knevitt said "the cover fits the conventions of existing magazines. I like the style of the cover as it attracted my attention to it with the bold masthead and good image choice. I liked the contents as it has allot of content and interested me to see what would be in the magazine, I also liked that there was synergy between the cover and the contents. The image choice on the contents also worked well and fitted with the magazine style. The double page spread was interesting and showed many of the features of the double page spreads found in other magazines. As with the contents there is clear synergy between all the sections and overall I liked the look and tone that the magazine "TURN 45" presented"

I altered the placement of my columns on my double page spread. I did this to fill the gap in the centre as this made the page look unbalanced and unprofessional. I still fitted them around my advertisement for the album as this was a feature i noticed in my style models.

My Artical


The text for my magazine has a profesional theme to it but I feel that the text is to seperated so I intend to alter this.

The text about the album

I spotted several spelling and punctuation mistakes in my final double page spread. I realised that this would not be professional enough and so changed these. Here is my revised edition.

ALBUM COVER

I created an album cover to have on my double page spread as I noticed that many of my style models advertised the albums of the artist the article is about. I chose to make my own rather than copy one as this allowed me to show synergy between the style of the artist and the album cover.I used the same type of image as I have used throughout my magazine to show this link between them.

 



Double Page Spread

I am very happy with the outcome of my double page spread. I think the picture is effective as it draws your attention in and is eye caching. The quoat i made was desinged to be funny and engaging to an audience. and the font and colour used create a line of synergy between this and the rest of the magazine. The text of the artical was made up of an interview i wrote after looking at the style of magazine interviews. The first section sets the scene and gives a view of the artist and the second part begins the interview.

I layed it out in two coloms as I felt this was the most astheticly pleasing as it alowed me to place the CD sales section in the middle without breaking up the text. I used large cappital letters at the start of both sections to show a change in the tone of the artical and that a new section was beeing started.

I am happy with the overall look of my piece as it has many of the qualities of a double page spread. Also it shows the synergy between the cover the contents and the double page spread.

Plan

I planned my double page spread with half of it taken up by a large picture. The pictur I chose was.

I chose this as it is a large close up where my model is useing a direct mode of address which is characteristic of my style models.










I desinged my double page spread with this image in mind.

My desing has used half a page of text in two coloms and the heading as a quoat that will attract the attention of a reader. I will also include a CD cover image. The quoat will be in orange and in the same font as used throughout to create synergy between the sections.

The image will be in black and white just like my cover image and the image of Lady GaGa in my style model.

This image is eye chaching and also liks to my cover image creating synergy throughout my magazine.

Double Page Spread

I looked at the features of a double page spread and noted that atleast one page would be a picture and the othere would be only about half text. The perpose of this is to draw attention with the image and not put readers off with alot of text.

An artical is often sttarted with a quoat as a headline. This draws attention and is often funny or dramatic, this encourages the audience to read on. There is rerley a picture on the other page unless it is an advertisemant for a CD and in this case t=its a small image.

 This magazine shows a large image taking up one whole page. the text on the other side is alot more than standars but I liked the attention grabbing image and cappital 'L' that bring your attention to the artical.

I liked the font here as it gives a sivilised upperclass image and again the image taked up half one page with a big bold image that will attract an audiences attention. The quoat is also used to draw attention aswell as the smaller advertiseing images.





I noticed that in both of the images the model is using a direct mode of address. and they were also mid - close up shots that bring your attention to the model and then incourage you to read the artical.

the layout of the text is also in colloms wich brakes down the text and makes it more acsessable to an audience.

Contents

I am happy with my Contents page as there is a clear conection between this page and my cover. Around two therds of the page is text as there are alot of features which is inportant as the magazine costa alot and should there for have alot of content.

I have broken the page into sections so as not to complicate or overwelm a reader.

The pictures all link into the magazine with the biggest picture linking to the cover and the main artical.

The page No.'s are in differant colours to make them stand out. Also the main section of the titles are in capitals and black while the rest is in grey and lower case. This means that if you scan read then your eyes are drawn to the inportant sections.

The puff at the bottom also draws attention.

I'm very happy with the outcome of my contents page as I think that it has conformed with all the featers I noticed about contents pages and there is a good level of synergy between the cover and the contence which is inportant.

There are inprovents I have made after sugestions such as adding the headlines to the pictures and also using only one record rather than 3 as that overcrouded the page. My final add ons were the website 'www.TURN45.co.uk' and the QR code.

I have made alot of features as it will attract a wider audience and show that my magazine is worth while.

Contents Plan

I have desinged my contents to alow as much space as possible for the features as these are the most inportant aspects of the contents page.

The pictures will link to the front cover and articals as this will provide synergy between the sections of the magazine.

The colours and fonts will also link between the cover and the contents and also the double page spred.

The articals are split into sections to make the page easyer to understand and breaks up the text to even it out across the page.

Synergy
This is very inportant as this is what links your magazine togeather and will make it recognisabe. Q magazine uses the red of the cover throughout there magazine to show synergy between the sections. I will do this with the orange of my cover. Its inportant to show a conection as the style of all the sections will be recognisabe as the part of your magazine.

Plan
I planned my contents with alot of articals. I intend to use the same orange colour scheme as on the front cover and fonts to create synergy throughout the magazine and show a clear conection betwean all of the sections.
I have chosen to use poiloroid pictures and vinyl records on my contence page as they link to the retro theme and the style of the music, again creating synergy betwean the style of the magazine and the type of music that is featured.
I have also added in a Compotition section as this is a feature of several magazine contents pages that i studied.
There is also a website and QR coade link for the magazine as these piecs of infomation can often be found on the the contents page of a magazine.

Contents Page

I looked at several magazine contents pages and looked for what I would have to include in my own magazine.
I noticed that inportant things to have were:
Pictures
Lots of cotent lists
Synergy with the cover
Clear lay out
I there for decided to aply all of these aspects to my own work.

This magazine has a long list of content and a mix of photos relleant to the articals.the long list is inportant as it shows that there will be a greatdeal of content in the magazine.

The main image will usualy link to the cover image aswell as that is the most inportant artical of the magazine, this will be the biggest and most attention grabbing image on the contentce page. 

There are obvious colloms of infomation and a large level of articals are listed showing there is alot of content making the magazine worth while.this will encourage readers to buy the magzine for a higher price as it is worth the money.

FRONT COVER
this is my final front cover. I am happy with the look of my magazine as I like that it is bold, clear and I feel would attract atention on a magazine shelf. the contract in the colour and font of the coverlines with the main coverline draws atention to the feature artical and gives the cover the style that I liked from the insperation of my style model of 'mojo' the clean cut colour theme will be continued throughout my magazine as will the fonts for perticular articals. I will use sinergy throughout my magazine to show that they are all conected and to contine the same standard of work throughout the rest of my work.

 Here is my first version of my masthead, this was the first step in making my front cover. It was inportant to use a bold colour.






 the next stage was to add the main image and main strapline I used the same colour but a differant font to make it stand out.

I then added coverlines on ither side of my image in a differant font and colour so it is clear to an audiance that 'sacha stone' if the focus. I put several on as I wanted to show that there was more than one story to my magazine. 

my next step was to add a puff in a bright bold colour that would draw atention to the cover. the reason I did this was that it was a feature of many of the magazines I looked at. I placed it in the top corner as in this way it did not intrude into the image but was still visible and clear.

I also included a tag line that would be short and memorable and also fitted with the colour theme of the cover, this was a theme I intend to use throughout the whole magazine.

I made it so there was also a website address on the front cover aswell as the small deatailes like isue number, date, price, bar code. theas aspects were what would make my magazine look more profetional. this was the final stage of my creation of my front cover.

MASTHEAD
I made my masthead to be clear, simple and bold. it is in a colour that will stand out and I will use throughout my magazine. I placed a drop shadow on the word 'TURN' as it is similar to the masthead on my style model magazine of 'mojo' I mad the 45 smaller as it is not as significant and I felt a 4 letter masthead would stand out more.

Cover Image

I chose this as it is bold and shows a good mid shot of the model, I took this photo in this way to show the light hitting down on her face from an angle. I chose to remove the shadow and background as I wanted a plain background, I also made the picture black and white altered the tone of the image to highlight the lips and eyes. this would also emulate my style model MOJO. the pose is interesting and gives options for surounding it with sub titles and is provocotive to mach the genre of music (like adele and emeli sande)

MY AUDIENCE

The audience I have targeted are the 'swarve' trendy adult audience. Jazz and Soul music has a general audience type so I have targeted this existing audience with my magazine. I will try to attract this audience with a cool theme look to my magazine.

Planning
responding to my style model I desinged a cover with a bold 4 letter masthead and and a domonating image that gowns over my masthead in places to make it bold. There is a large cover image to draw attention. I have also planned to use one main colour throughout and use black and white as this will be attention grabbing aswell as similar to my style model of 'MOJO' 

Style Model
MOJO

 Large black and white image - plain background - contrast with image - only colour in Masthead and main focus line - sub headings are plain - image gows over the masthead. I intend to use similar features of theis magazine in my own magazine.

TITLE OF MAGAZINE

TURN 45, I chose this to be a simple and catchy title that will be memorable and that people will remember to buy. The title is 4 letters long as it replicates my style model of 'MOJO'

 Images

the imerges of my magazine will be composed to replicate the style of artists such as Frank Sinatra, Adele and Michael Buble. the style of there images are often sopisticated and controled.

the overall look of the

images are often in darkend coulers or black and white. mostely mid shots, an image in this style would work to be my cover image.

Magazine Style
I intend to give my magazine a classy image replicateing such images as the cover of Michael Buble's new 'crazy love' album.

the coloures of this type of image are not bright over the top coloures, they are often black, grey or silver with only ocational flashs of a bright colour.

by maching this sort of colour palet my magazine will be able to have the sophisticated style that mirrors the style of the music.

GENRE
the genre of my magazine is going to be swing/jazz/blues, the sort of music lead by artists like Michael Buble and Adele. as this style of music is quite classic and old-school I intend to replicate that image in the look of my magazine.

Collage Magazine Analysis:

 1-my cover follows the convention of my style models with a domonating mid shot of my model, a large title and subtitles. I differed from my style models with such a bright background as they tend to be less stand out colours, and the contence page does not have as much infomation on as others. also the contence doesnt have as many

points of interest as my style moidel. this is something i could address in my music magazine.

2-the styles and slogans I have used reflect the youth/collage student audiance that my magazine is aimed at. the conputer font used on the contents page is similar top the fonts of mobile phones and social networking sutes. the bright bold coloures and pictures also reflect the youth influance as do the fonts I have used.

3-the audiance of my media product is youth/collage aged students who would read this to get infomation on there school.

4-I attracted my audience by using fonts, coloures and pictures all rellevent to my chosen audiance. the contents page did not work as well as I had hoped to attract and engage ny audience as it was not as stand out interesting as i wanted it to be to get teenagers to notice it. I addressed the needs of my audience by using subtitles that are rellevent to my audiance and the school, I did this as they are obviously more likely to read something that is directly rellevent to them and that addresses there needs and interests.

5-I descovered that it is inportant to put the time and effort into creating your magazine so as to get the most out of the technologies I have used.

things that are necicery for the sale of the magazine, these apear on all magazines as they are necicery infomation to the reader and the barcoad is neciacery for the sale, these tend to be small as they do not want to intrude on the magazines cover.

if there is a little corner piece that tells you the price or a promotion or some small piece on the edge of the magazine that provides infomation on the magazine these are used to explain inportant infomation in a clear way that does not detract from the magazine, they are not however always used.

to include the reader as a friend and chat to them, this is often used on the cover image and by addressing the reader as 'YOU'

keeping the audiance at a distance and keeping it formal can also be used if the perpose of the magazine requiers it, Music magz often use DMA to attract attention and create a strikeing image.

cover lines
they have an average of 6-12 cover lines to intice diferant audiances towards there magazines, they will uses several literary techniques and coloures/graphics to capture the attention of audiences, included with secondery images they intice the audience quickly and effectively.

secondary images
smaller less significant images that refer to features of the magazine but that are not the main focus. the more images you have may draw in a wider audiance. they will often have there own anchorage aswell on the cover. some magazines do not use these as they can also detract attention from the cover image.

anchorage
when images are refered to, the imerges are often anchored by ccaptions of sub titles. they often directly explain or refer to the picture. this all helpes to give meaning to the image and its significance.

 MUSIC MAGZ

the feature of this mag is clear and obvious and the image is interesting but simple and the wriring is clear and readerble

 the picture covers the title the title is clear but not so much as to steel focus, the image is a mid shot of the upper body of the cover modle. the size of the other titles are diferant in size depending on there significance.

 the main feature is as big as the title, and eye caching taking up the center of the page and clearly informing the audiance, it is also ancerd to the picture behind.

the picture is a full lenth action shot of the modle and the outfit which is coloure coardanated with the rest of the cover. the sub-titles are clear but not overpowering. the inportance of each sub title is obvious. the tag line runs across the top to be clear when in a magazine rack.

Contentse
thew blue contrasts with the orange backgroung and the images attract attention to the page however I feel this is not as good as it could be as there are few articals and could do with miore images. This is something I will take into acount when planning my Music Mag.

Finished S magazine cover
the blue contrasts with the orange background. the tagline is smaller but still stands out, the other titles stand out and the purple circle in the bottom right is clear and draws attention. The intention of all of these things is to create a cover that will stand out from the croud and draw the attention of my targert audience.

School Mag
I have aplyed a light blue background to my magazine so as to not over power the main image. the title mixes to much with the backgroud so I will change the colour to emphosise the Masthead. I have also added a sub title in an action font to attract atention and make it look dramatic. 

Front Cover
I have placed the centeral image slightly over the title as it is the focus,I have added the second word smaller and in lower case as it is a less significant word.
